Challenges
During climbing competitions, there can be more than a hundred people participating. Each participant gets a pen and paper to keep track of the climbs he completed. This is tedious and slow because the paper can get destroyed, pens get lost and at the end, the staff has to calculate the score for each participant and create a leaderboard. This is slow and hard. What One Move Climbing Gym wanted, was to digitalize this process in an app where everyone can track their climbs and score in real-time. Also, people should be able to register for a competition, solo or with a team, directly from the app.
Solution
One Move Climbing Gym turned to Tmz Software to create a mobile experience using the Flutter platform. By leveraging our deep experience, UI/UX design, and project management, we delivered a working app in only two months. Since then we worked together on new features and improved the user experience.
Impact
Since the launch of the app, members of the gym have been very happy to have a place to easily track their progress. We saw a 98% adoption of the app among the gym members with a 60% weekly usage.
App Presentation
One of the application’s key functionalities is the ‘Climbing Route Topo’ interface. This feature provides users with a comprehensive view of all available climbing routes and challenges within the gym. It offers a filtering system, allowing climbers to sort routes based on various criteria such as difficulty level, specific location within the gym, post-event availability, or to view uncompleted routes. Additionally, users can mark routes as completed. Completion of routes will update the user’s standing on the gym’s leaderboard. Furthermore, this feature includes an analytical component, showcasing individual performance statistics and tracking the remaining routes for users to attempt. This integration of functionality not only enhances user experience but also promotes a structured and goal-oriented approach to climbing within the gym environment
An additional feature of the application is the ranking system, which is calibrated based on user performance. The core elements determining a user’s rank include the number of attempts taken to complete routes and the difficulty level of these routes. This dynamic ranking mechanism not only provides a quantitative measure of climbing proficiency but also encourages skill development and strategic planning in route completion. The ranking can also be filtered by gender, climbing level(Rookie/Master) and a period of time(Current Topo, last month, since the beginning).
The application also has a sophisticated module for Events and Competitions, designed to cater to a diverse range of climbing enthusiasts. The competition framework within the app offers versatile registration options, accommodating individual participants as well as teams. A key feature of these competitions is the customizable ranking system, which allows for nuanced scoring metrics. This includes assigning varying point values based on the difficulty levels of the routes and providing bonus points for achieving specific ranges of attempts. Additionally, the competitions can be segmented into bespoke categories, such as ‘Rookie Women’ and ‘Rookie Men’, to ensure a tailored and inclusive competitive environment.
A pivotal aspect of this system is the real-time calculation and display of rankings. This dynamic feature enables participants to view and filter the leaderboard based on categories, team composition, and gender, thus enhancing the competitive experience and engagement. This real-time functionality not only fosters a transparent and competitive atmosphere but also allows climbers to strategically track and adapt their performance in alignment with the evolving leaderboard standings
